This is not the same species with Betel Nut (Piper betel) which is used as a stimulant in many Asian cultures. This species is significantly smaller, lack the intense taste, semi pendulous and popular as a leaf wrapper for meat dishes. Can be eaten raw as a salad in many Southeast Asian cuisine especially Vietnam, Thai, Laos, and Malaysia.
This species is traditionally use for anti inflammation and snakebites on neurotic venoms. Naringenin is the antioxidant found in the matter and amides from the extracted leaf has been proven to treat tuberculosis and Plasmodium sp (Malaria).
